They came in the hundreds, young and old and everything in between. They came in their No. 4 hats and No. 29 shirts, with a license plate that read "HARVIC4" and with dozens of other items for the champ to sign.

And then there he was, Bakersfield's own Kevin Harvick, Wednesday at the Boys & Girls Club of Kern County at 801 Niles Street.

Harvick, the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, entered to a standing ovation and left 30 minutes later to another one.

It was what happened in between, though, that really made Harvick happy: He announced that his charity foundation has partnered with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to remodel the gym and the outdoor playground at the Boys & Girls Club.

"It's really not about the cheers; it's really more about the kids," Harvick said afterward. "... It's better than winning any race when you can make those kids smile and se the impact that you can make on a facility and give them a safe place to come play or do activities."
